Western Australia’s annual Royal Academy of Dance Festival will be held Friday 31 May until Monday 3 June at John Curtin College of the Arts.

Hosted by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), the festival will see dancers competing for three scholarships.  The festival is not just about competing, though, but about offering WA students valuable performance experience, says RAD President, Carole Hill.  “It’s a wonderful opportunity for teachers to showcase their schools and give their students a chance to perform in front of a live audience,” she remarks.  “It is also very interesting for the teachers to witness the standards of other schools. As WA is so cut off from the Eastern States where there is a lot more on offer for ballet students, the RAD WA feel it is very important to provide as much opportunity and help as possible to nurture our young talent.”

The adjudicators for the 2013 RAD Festival are Josef Brown, Andries Weidemann and Margete Helgeby.

The event’s sections will encompass classical, demi-character, national, contemporary and own choreography categories as well as the three scholarships in which students aged 10-16+ will be entering. The ensemble category, in which nine ballet schools will compete, will be judged for the prestigious David McAllister Cup.

On Sunday 3 June the winners of all sections will come together on stage for the anticipated "Gala Performance", a spectacular presentation showcasing some of WA’s promising new dance talent including a new Pre-Professional Award.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased from the door (Adults $10, Children $5) as can tickets for the "Gala Performance" on Sunday Evening, June 3 (Adults $25, children $20.)
