Expressions Dance Company (EDC) is about to set off on a massive tour of Natalie Weir’s Carmen Sweet, through New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. The tour kicks off at the Mildura Arts Centre on Saturday 3 October and concludes at the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth on Saturday 21 November, taking in Wagga Wagga, Queanbeyan, Melbourne, Moonee Ponds, Hawthorn, Kyneton, Colac Otway, Warrnambool, Portland,Mt Gambier, Renmark, Parramatta, Penrith, Bathurst and Orange in between.

Weir’s reimagining of the classic Spanish take of love sees Carmen’s sultry persona represented by three EDC dancers who represent her different states of mind and alter egos.

Naïve soldier Don Jose has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen. Jose tries to tame the freedom-loving beauty and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are immersed in jealousy and revenge.

This production is performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite, an arrangement of Bizet’s original Carmen score. The set is bare, save for Salvador Dali’s famous red-lipped Bocca sofa (pictured).
