Dirty Dancing in Concert will come to Sydney later this year, bringing the classic 1987 film to Darling Harbour Theatre, ICC Sydney, on 28 November.
Presented by Lionsgate, GEA Live and Karl Sydow, the live-to-film concert experience pairs a screening of the digitally remastered film with a live band and vocalists performing the movie’s hit songs in sync with the full-size screen. Following the screening, the event continues with an after-party, where audience members are encouraged to sing and dance along to songs from the film.
The Australian date forms part of a world tour spanning more than 100 cities. Nearly a quarter of a million tickets have been sold to date for the concert experience, which celebrates the film’s enduring popularity and multi-platinum soundtrack.
Released in 1987, Dirty Dancing starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey as Johnny and Baby, and became an international box office success. Directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Eleanor Bergstein, the film remains closely associated with its music and dance sequences, including its Academy Award-winning song, (I've Had) The Time of My Life.
“Dirty Dancing has always been more than just a movie - it’s a cultural touchstone that continues to resonate across generations,” says Floris Douwes, Producer and Managing Director at GEA Live. “We’re ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring this live-to-film celebration back to audiences around the world, combining the magic of the original film with the energy of a live concert.”
Karl Sydow has produced Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage across the UK and internationally since 2004.
