Arts Centre Melbourne’s Stage Presence – Design from the Australian Performing Arts Collection opens 30 April. Featuring costumes and set designs from some of Australia’s most esteemed designers, dance is well represented in the exhibition.
In particular, designer Hugh Colman is one of Australia’s best-known dance, theatre and opera designers. In 2015 he donated nearly 200 of his costume designs, created between 1970 and 2009 to Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection. Included in the collection are more than 30 costume designs from Maina Gielgud’s 1984 production of The Sleeping Beauty for the Australian Ballet.
As well as Colman, the exhibition features designs by Roger Kirk, Brian Thomson, Alicia Clements, Akira Isogawa and Anna Cordingley.
