Dance Creation 2014 was launched on Friday evening at Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre. Initiated in 1996 by Marilyn Jones, OBE, Dance Creation is a biennial choreographic competition that seeks to foster the development and exposure of choreographers working in a classical, neo classical, modern or contemporary style. Supported by the Australian Institute of Classical Dance (AICD), choreographers are afforded an opportunity to present their work in front of a distinguished adjudication panel.

Choreographers must be 17 years or over to enter and their work must feature between three and six dancers. An original choreographic work of between 10 - 20 minutes' duration is to be presented. Preliminaries are awarded in each state, with the finals performed in Melbourne in late October. Finalists are selected for wonderful opportunities including the possibility of presenting at the Australian Ballet's Bodytorque choreographic season, the chance to create a work for Houston Ballet 2, under Stanton Welch, or a secondment with major Australian dance companies, Queensland Ballet and Expressions Dance Company.

Patrons of AICD, Dame Margaret Scott and David McAllister were present at the launch together with artistic director Marilyn Jones.
