Mirramu Dance Company (Lake George, ACT) will be presenting Morning Star at the National Gallery of Australia, March 1-3, as part of the Enlighten Canberra Festival.

Morning Star fuses traditional and contemporary dance and music, drawing on the ancient Yolngu Morning Star story – a life cycle story of enormous cultural significance and the oldest of its kind.   This season is the culmination of this two-year cross-cultural project.  Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, director of Mirramu Dance Company, and Torres Strait Islander company member, Albert David have worked with cultural consultants from Arnhem Land, Uncle Banula Marika and Djakapurra Munyarryun, to create a new contemporary dance work based on the traditional Yolngu Morning Star story. This season features Nalkuma Burarrwanga (didgeridoo), Janet Munyarryun, Peta Strachan, Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal and Miranda Wheen.

Mirramu Dance Company presents Australian contemporary dance in traditional and alternative settings.  The company’s philosophy is based on sharing and communicating through the creative process.  Artists from different disciplines are invited to guest with the company. Much of the company’s work is done in an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural context with high levels of community involvement via workshops, forums and events associated with each professional production.

Mirramu Dance Company was formed in 2002 by Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, assisted by dancer/choreographer, Vivienne Rogis.  Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is considered to be one of the pioneers of contemporary dance in Australia.  She founded Australian Dance Theatre in 1965 and was its director for ten years.  She was awarded an OAM in 1995 for her contribution to contemporary dance in Australia and received the 1997 Australian Dance Award for Lifetime Achievement.
