Launceston’s Junction Arts Festival includes a selection of dance works that seek to challenge traditional notions of dance.  The dance artists involved range from emerging artists to international award-winning hip-hop and break dancers.

Sydney-based hip-hop dancer Nick Power will present Cypher at Pilgrim Hall, Launceston, from 11-13 September.  Performed in break dance’s traditional cypher, or circle, Cypher sees the audience sharing the performance space with some of the worlds best B*Boys. Power and collaborators will hold a series of workshops before the Festival to engage the local dance community in the work.

On Dancefloors, by UK artist Abigail Conway, will be presented at the Junc Room Festival Club in Launceston September 12 and 13.  On Dancefloors is a one-on-one, interactive performance; a celebration for people who like to move, watch, or listen to loud music in contained spaces.  On Dancefloors explores the power dynamics of performance relationships through the shared movement of two strangers coming together to dance.

Local emerging artist Zeke Guest will present Close Your Eyes and Focus on Your Breath. With their eyes closed, audiences will be guided in a meditative performance that explores both the sensory and the imaginative. This is a developmental project and Guest’s first major solo work.

For those who love participating in a flash mob, Hobart’s SPACE present The Shinobi Experiment (dates and times to be confirmed).  The performance will involve a mini-training session and workshop at the Junc Room, Launceston, with the SPACE cadets before hitting the streets of Launceston’s CBD to perform.

If you prefer to dance without an audience, then No Lights, No Lycra may be for you.  Presented by Launceston’s Stompin, with venue, dates and times TBC, No Lights No Lycra is a casual free-form dance class in the dark for the pure joy of dancing. Local youth dance company Stompin will launch this exciting new program as part of Junction Arts Festival 2014, and it will become a monthly event at Stompin to provide for ANYONE to dance and let loose.
