Dancehouse’s Housemate Residency Program is an artist residency with a difference. Not only does the program provide 8 to 14 weeks of space, mentoring and administrative support but it is fully paid. That inclusion of a salary in a residency program is a rarity, not only in Australia but internationally.
Dancehouse’s current housemate is Victoria Chiu and the contemporary dance work she has been making during her residency, Floored, will be presented this week, from 14 to 15 August. Exploring comfort and complacency, Floored holds up a mirror to our relationship with the habits we constantly form and from which we struggle to break free. Shifting from moments of chaos to serenity, the work changes pace and energy as much as the habits we form and try to break.
Floored has an electronic, percussive and classical musical scores created by composer Roland Cox (who has also danced with Sydney Dance Company, Australian Dance Theatre and the Australian Ballet), and even features a cameo by a live, local choir. The custom built set constantly attracts and repels the dancers, ultimately causing them to want to break free from its confines.
