Queensland Ballet (QB) has announced that it will be presenting Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s celebrated ballet Romeo and Juliet, in June-July 2014.   The cast will include two international stars of ballet – Tamara Rojo, acclaimed Spanish ballerina and artistic director of the English National Ballet, and Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, a principal guest artist with the Royal Ballet.

The season is exclusive to Queensland and is happening as a result of the Queensland government’s “Super Star” project.  “The Super Star fund is a $3 million dollar commitment over four years,” Arts Minister Ian Walker says.  “We promised to bring international stars to our own backyard and this announcement delivers on that.”

As one might expected, QB’s artistic director, Li Cunxin, is thrilled by this rare opportunity to have access to MacMillan’s choreography.  “Kenneth MacMillan was one of the world’s most highly regarded choreographers, and classical companies from around the world vie for the opportunity to stage MacMillan’s works,” remarks Cunxin.“MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet is widely considered the best in the world. It is rarely seen outside the UK and has never performed in Australia. It is wonderful Queensland has secured this exclusive production and an honour for the company.’’

Romeo and Juliet will be performed by Queensland Ballet, 27 June – 5 July 2014 at QPAC.
