When Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s contemporary dance ensemble Rosas performs at Carriageworks in Sydney this September, history will be made. It’s the first time that contemporary dance has been included in the Biennale of Sydney program. It’s not De Keersmaeker’s only triumph in recent times – she has just been named Dancer of the Year by European dance magazine, Tanz.
Rosas will present En Atendant and Cesena as part of the Biennale. Both works are as much about music as dance. En Atendant is an exploration of the relationship between music and dance and uses complex 14th century music as its starting point. In Cesena musical director Björn Schmelzer has dancers singing and singers dancing, pushing the performers in new directions.
If you’re in Sydney this is a rare opportunity to see the work of one of Europe’s most celebrated contemporary choreographers.
When: September 11 to 15
