The Queensland Ballet’s annual “. . . with Attitude season” is a showcase for new choreography. This year it will feature the work of a new up-and-coming choreographer from within the company’s own ranks – Gareth Belling.
Belling was selected for the national 2011 Jump mentorship program. Managed by Youth Arts Queensland and supported by the Australia Council, Jump puts together promising young artists in their first five years of practice with mature professionals. Belling is being mentored by renowned Dutch choreographer Nils Christe, with whom the Queensland Ballet has a close partnership.
A dancer with the company since 2002, Belling began choreographing from 2005, creating a number of small works for the Vis-à-vis studio programs. His first commissioned main-stage production came in 2009 when he created Refraction for ...”with Attitude”. This year’s work is titled Transition Sequence.
Belling has recently undertaken a European to help broaden his knowledge of current choreographic trends. As part of this trip, he attended the Swiss International Coaching Project for Choreographers (SiWiC) in Zurich. SiWic is a coaching project - once a year, six young choreographers are given the opportunity to explore their own style and to experiment with various aspects of choreography while being personally coached for two-and-a-half weeks by a internationally renowned choreographer. Furthermore, he will work with an ensemble of 22 professional dancers – a rare luxury for an emerging choreographer.
Belling also visited Berlin, Vienna and London.
For “. . .with Attitude”, Belling’s Transition Sequence will share the bill with Christe’s Purcell Pieces, and a new work multimedia creation by QB company director, Francois Klaus, called I Imagined You Here.
