Newcastle’s Catapult Dance Choreographic Centre is about to commence a series of residencies. The first of these will see Adam Blanch and Kristina Chan collaborating with local film maker Neil Mansfield and local emerging dance artist Raegan Ashley Williams, to present an informal showing on 21 and 22 August.

Catapult Dance Choreographic Centre was established in 2014 by Cadi McCarthy, the centre’s artistic director. Catapult Dance Choreographic Centre is made up of three tiers, all of which are focused on the creation of contemporary dance and collaborations across artistic disciplines.

Professional contemporary and interdisciplinary residencies, such as the one described above, make up one tier of the centre. Under the name of Propel, dance and choreographic artists from anywhere in Australia may come and be resident in the Newcastle studio for a number of weeks, in order to create original work.

Flipside Project is the second tier of the centre. This project is about making intensive dance programs for youth. Resident artists are invited to assist in Catapult’s Schools Project, designed to give primary and secondary students a taste of life in a professional dance company.

The third tier of the centre is Catapult, which consists of masterclasses and holiday programs aimed at the youth and community dance sectors. Drop-in dance classes for children, young people and adults are also part of this program.
