BlakDance 2012, an international showcase of contemporary indigenous dance, is being held in Brisbane in June, the first such event in Australia, according to organisers.
Three Australian choreographers – Rita Price (artistic director, Baiwa Dance Company, Qld); Tammi Gissell (independent artist, NSW) and Jacob Boehme (artistic director, Idja Dance Theatre, Vic) will be joined by three from overseas – Sandra Laronde (Canada) and Jack Gray and Kathy Livermore (both from New Zealand).
The showcase event is being presented by BlakDance Australia Ltd, an indigenous dance advocacy body that was born from an Ausdance National program called Treading the Pathways. Like Treading the Pathways, BlakDance Australia Limited’s purpose is to support Indigenous Australian contemporary dance and dancers.
The six-day event will include a professional development program for emerging and established dance artists, including masterclasses, forums, a symposium, a “BlakDance Yarning Circle” and networking opportunities.
Dates: 4 – 9 June 2012
Venue: Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre Company
