Attention secondary school students of Aboriginal/and or Torres Strait Islander descent!

Bangarra Dance Theatre is holding auditions for its youth program, Rekindling.  This is your chance to learn from artists of Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Rekindling was launched in 2013 to help connect Indigenous secondary students with their cultural heritage through dance.  The project is directed by former Bangarra dancer Sidney Saltner.  “Rekindling is exactly that; it’s about creating a safe environment for both participants and elders to be able to share, connect, learn and teach each other. It’s showing that the next generation of leaders are ready for the elders to hand down their cultural knowledge. We need to preserve and rekindle our languages, songs and dances so we don’t lose these important stories forever,” says Saltner. “It’s fantastic to see the students uncover their stories as the series of three workshops unfold, up until the final gathering which culminates in a performance to their friends, community and elders.”

In 2015 Rekindling will visit four communities in Adelaide (SA), Dubbo (NSW), Mackay and Brisbane (QLD). The first of the series kicks off in just a few weeks’ time, with Adelaide auditions to be held on Monday February 9, followed by Dubbo on February 12, Mackay on February 16 and Brisbane on February 19.
