Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) has announced that applications are now open for its 2026 EXPOUND Residency, one of Australia’s most significant opportunities for independent choreographers.
Taking place in LOFT’s dedicated studio at the Lion Arts Centre in Adelaide, the successful applicant will receive a $30,000 grant and up to six weeks of studio time from 16 February to 27 March 2026.
A partnership between ADT and CreateSA, LOFT was launched in 2025 as a hub for South Australia’s independent dance sector, providing residencies, workshops and free studio access. The 2025 EXPOUND recipient, acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist Christopher Gurusamy, developed his new work Kalki through the program.
ADT Executive Producer Viviana Sacchero says EXPOUND continues to be an important investment in artistic development. “The creation of dance needs dedicated space and time. EXPOUND gives artists free reign to crack into new ideas, try new things, and rigorously develop works in a completely supported environment,” she says. “As opportunities like this get rarer throughout the country, we’re thrilled to have the ongoing support of CreateSA to continue this work alongside the community here in South Australia.”
Timed to coincide with Adelaide’s peak festival season, the residency allows the selected artist to engage with a vibrant national and international dance network. Open to mid-career and established choreographers with at least ten years of professional experience, EXPOUND supports artists at a pivotal point in their creative journey.
“We want to encourage artists to create sustainably,” Sacchero adds. “EXPOUND is a place for big choreographic ideas, deep thinking, and to create the work that artists are the most passionate about.”
Applications will be assessed by ADT Artistic Director Daniel Riley, alongside arts leader Marilyn Miller and Michael Keegan-Dolan, Founder and Artistic Director of Teaċ Daṁsa. Submissions close 9pm Sunday 16 November 2025.
The remainder of LOFT’s 2026 program will be announced later this year.
