Dance Australia Sydney correspondent Emma Sandall reports from the finals of the inaugural Keir Choreographic Award.

Phillip Keir quoted jurist Marten Spangberg before announcing the winner of the inaugural Keir Choreographic Awards: "Awards are like 18th century executions. They bring an audience." Last night the audience was full.

After the performance, Phillip Keir announced the winner – Atlanta Eke. The audience prize went to Jane McKernan. The two other finalists were Sarah Aiken and Mathew Day.

It was a thoroughly impressive event. Each choreographer presented interesting, challenging work and ideas.

Also to be mentioned the collaborators in each of the works, in particular the sound and lighting designs.

Truly excellent.

– Emma Sandall
