Alice Topp to Premiere Macbeth with West Australian Ballet in 2026
West Australian Ballet has unveiled the final piece of its 2026 season: Macbeth, a bold new contemporary ballet from award-winning choreographer Alice Topp. Presented in association with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the production will take the stage at His Majesty’s Theatre from 4–19 September 2026, with live accompaniment by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Fresh from the acclaim of her 2024 world premiere Butterfly Effect, Topp now turns her lens to Shakespeare’s dark psychological tragedy, reimagining the play through the prism of modern power, politics and media. In this co-production, ambition and morality collide in a world of corporate intrigue and manipulation, where the ghosts of guilt and desire move as relentlessly as the score.
“Macbeth is an extraordinary exploration of human consequence,” says incoming Artistic Director Leanne Stojmenov. “Alice’s work always finds the emotional core of a story — she distils something timeless and recognisably human. This ballet will be both cinematic and raw.”
The production marks a new chapter in Topp’s long association with West Australian Ballet, where her emotionally charged movement vocabulary and visual precision have resonated strongly with audiences. The creative team will bring together some of Australasia’s leading design and lighting collaborators, promising a production that fuses contemporary dance theatre with striking visual storytelling.
Macbeth joins a 2026 season titled Of Here. From Then., which also features Incandescence: Ballet at the Quarry, Dracula, Genesis, and The Nutcracker. Together, these works reflect a company celebrating its legacy while stepping boldly toward new artistic terrain.
Tickets for Macbeth go on sale from 5 November 2025 via West Australian Ballet.
