Dancing ironing boards, books that fly through the air, a quartet of couches with a definite attitude… welcome to Australian Dance Theatre’s new work Habitus. Created by ADT artistic director Garry Stewart with Larissa McGowan, Habitus examines our obsession with material goods and how today’s treasures become tomorrow’s junk.

“These objects that we covet, that we insist on surrounding ourselves with, inevitably wind up as unwanted trash,” Stewart says. “In Habitus, this enormous pile of leftovers from the 21st century eventually is reclaimed by nature, so the dancers then transform into kind of creatures, and represent an ecosystem of the biological world around us. The Earth ultimately consumes these items and everything is restored to nature.”

Habitus will premiere at the Adelaide Festival, 26 February. For more bookings head to www.bass.net.au
