Adelaide's centre for contemporary dance, LWDance Hub, is launching a new Open House Program this month, under the direction of newly appointed Open House Producer Callan Fleming, an independent South Australian dance artist and choreographer.

Held once every two months at the Hub's city studios in the Lion Arts Centre, the Open House events will provide an arena for dancers to meet and share their work and ideas, make new connections and explore professional partnerships, as well as learn from visiting guest artists.

Fleming said the Open House Program was an exciting new way for local dance artists to collaborate.

“A discussion between artists can inspire, provoke and prod creativity. Just knowing about the practice and interests of those artists around you can bring fresh energy to your own practice and inspire others to get involved,” Fleming said.

The inaugural Open House on Sunday, April 30 will feature Perth-based performer James Berlyn, an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose career spans three decades and encompasses works at major events including Perth, Brisbane and Sydney Festivals, WOMAdelaide and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Berlyn will also be presenting a series of three performance workshops at LWDance Hub throughout 2017, designed in consultation with newly appointed Associate Curator Amanda Phillips, an award-winning independent choreographer and director.

Beginning with a two-part class on Saturday April 29 and Monday May 1, which is being offered free to participants thanks to assistance from Arts South Australia, these workshops will build towards developing a collaborative performance project with Mr Berlyn later in the year.

LWDance Hub's Artist Residency Program will also continue this year, with Alison Currie, Carlie Angel and Tobiah Booth-Remmers confirmed for 2017. Designed to promote artistic development at a grass roots level, the Artist in Residence program allows practitioners to experiment, research and refine their work in the Hub's professional dance studio, use office space and equipment and seek advice from mentors.

The Hub is also expanding its popular program of classes for the general public, with Holiday Dance programs for secondary and tertiary students, Audition Application Days to help dancers navigate the audition process, Company Classes for professionals and Teacher Training Days for primary school teachers, to aid them in adhering to the dance portion of the new national arts curriculum.

LWDance Hub is directed by Leigh Warren. “This year's program and its participants starts what is needed to keep Adelaide's next generation of dance artists and creators vital and connected,” he says. “To quote a very famous song 'from little things big things grow' - may this enterprise grow into something vital and important for us all.”
