What is your best memory of your full-time dance studies?

My best memory of my full-time dance studies undoubtedly was winning the gold medal at the Genee International Ballet Competition in Toronto, Canada. I was already excited to work with world renowned teachers and choreographers but I was honoured to be awarded by Dame Monica Mason DBE, Karen Kain CC, Magdelena Popa and Mikko Nissinen. It was a culmination and a celebration of hard work which opened many opportunities, scholarships and invitations to train with international schools in England, Germany and Canada.

It is important to acknowledge that my successes in and out of the studio were a result of the expert training from my teachers at Alegria Dance Studios. Hilary Kaplan and Archibald McKenzie have provided me with holistic training, concentrating not only on technique, musicality and artistry but preparing me for a career. At Alegria, I also have had the privilege of learning from industry professionals, including Paul Saliba, Adrian Burnett, Joshua Consandine and Penny Martin, who have all enhanced my versatility, which I believe is so important these days as a dancer. I am currently part of the Queensland Ballet PPP under the guidance of Christian Tatchev and Li Cunxin, who continue to inspire my passion and love of dance.

Did your original career aim change from when you started your studies to when you graduated?

My original career aim when I started my studies was simply to become a ballerina. When I graduated, my aim didn’t really change, however it has become more complex, diverse and sophisticated. I am more determined and curious than ever to evolve as an artist. I have been fortunate to have had many opportunities to work with teachers and choreographers here and abroad, where I have gained invaluable experience and knowledge. I still want to perform Swan Lake and the classics, as well as MacMillan and Wheeldon, but am equally enthusiastic to be part of a Wayne McGregor or Crystal Pite creation.
