Graduate Profile: Henry Burgess

How did your training experience shape your growth as a dancer and individual?
It had always been my dream to join The Royal Ballet School from a young age, and all of my teachers at The McDonald College believed in my abilities and potential, especially when I struggled to believe in myself. Moving away from Sydney the week I turned sixteen provided me with many different challenges artistically and emotionally.
Being surrounded by the best dancers in the world has not only been the most humbling experience, but the most rewarding too. Being able to learn and grow with the highest calibre of talent has built my resilience and confidence. One of the biggest challenges I overcame was homesickness, but learning to adapt to a new country and environment taught me independence and helped me grow both as a dancer and as a person.
I still find it very difficult being away from my family, especially when some of the days are tougher than usual. What helps me overcome homesickness is constantly keeping my head up and working to the best of my abilities every day, honouring the sacrifices and support my family has provided me with.
How has your understanding of dance as an art form evolved during your full-time studies? Were there any particular moments or experiences that shifted your perspective?
Before joining The Royal Ballet School, I was significantly focused on competitions and comparisons with other dancers. This professional industry is beyond difficult on many levels; however, the only person that you should compete with is yourself. The number of pirouettes you can do does not define your worth. It is about waking up every day, working to your fullest potential and never forgetting why you pursued dance.
For me, dance is my life. Even when days get tough, it’s the love I have for this art form that keeps me getting up every morning and giving it my all. I am beyond excited to have started my professional journey with English National Ballet in July.
This would not have been possible without my family and teachers at The McDonald College and The Royal Ballet School, who never gave up on my abilities. I would not even be a quarter of the dancer I am without my support network, and I will continue to work to my fullest potential and acknowledge everyone who has believed in where my talent could take me.
