Full-time training: Nova City Ballet, Newcastle, NSW
Presently: Academy of Northern Ballet (Graduate Program), with guest performances with Northern Ballet, Leeds, United Kingdom
How did the community within your program (teachers, peers) shape your experience and growth as a dancer and individual? Can you share a specific example?
Nova City Ballet is a community that is incredibly supportive, inspiring, and nurturing, which played a huge role in my growth as a dancer and an individual. The studio’s strong values are reflected in every aspect of the training environment. I was surrounded by passionate teachers and hardworking peers who constantly encouraged one another to strive for excellence while still feeling valued and supported as individuals.
Teachers genuinely care about each student’s development, both technically and personally, and create a safe, positive, and motivating atmosphere. One example that stands out was during major performance preparation periods, when the support between teachers and students became incredibly strong. Everyone worked together to push through challenges, celebrate achievements, and encourage one another. That sense of teamwork and encouragement helped build my confidence, resilience, and discipline, shaping not only my abilities as a dancer but also who I am outside the studio.
What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing full-time dance studies at the school you attended?
My advice to someone considering full-time training at Nova City Ballet is to absolutely go for it and enter the experience with passion, an open mind, and a willingness to grow personally, artistically, and technically. Nova City Ballet creates an environment that encourages creativity, resilience, adaptability, and strong artistry, while supporting every student to reach their full potential both inside and outside the studio.
Full-time training can be physically and mentally demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding if you fully commit to the process and trust your teachers. One of the most important lessons I learnt was the value of resilience and not comparing my journey to those of others, as everyone develops at their own pace. The teachers consistently encourage individuality, emotional authenticity, and artistic growth.
I would encourage students to take every opportunity offered, whether performances, workshops, feedback, or learning from peers around them. These experiences are just as valuable as technical training. Most importantly, remember why you started dancing and hold onto that passion through every moment.
