The December/January edition of Dance Australia has hit the shelves, packed full of fabulous stories.

Our cover photo this issue comes from Sydney Dance Company. Captured by Pedro Greig, it features Izzac Carroll, Jesse Scales and Todd Sutherland, in Melanie Lane’s WOOF, which will be presented next year in the company’s first season, "Bonachela, Nankivell, Lane".

And it’s Sydney Dance Company’s Rafael Bonachela who is one half of this issue’s "Great Collaborations" feature, alongside composer Nick Wales. Friends as well as colleagues, the pair have worked on six pieces together.

What do you think of dance competitions? Whether you pro, con or undecided, you’ll want to check out Olivia Stewart’s dive into the value of international dance competitions. Olivia has spoken to a fascinating selection of people, including Miko Fogarty, whose sudden disappearance from the world of professional dance was a shock to many. Find out what Miko and other experts had to say about the value and risks inherent in competitions.

Although we tend to think of the daily ballet class as being steeped in tradition, Emma Sandall has discovered that there are changes afoot in the world of professional ballet companies, as advances in dance and sports science and medicine filter into the studio. Read Emma’s article to find out how this is changing the way we train.

It’s all about the kids on the musical theatre stage over the next few months, writes Sally Clark, with shows such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, School of Rock, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Billy Elliot providing opportunities for young performers to shine over summer.

Plus we’ve got our annual Teachers' Spotlight, an interview with Natalie Weir as she leaves Expressions Dance Company after 10 years, Matthew Lawrence’s light-hearted reflection on the role of laughter in dance, B*boy Nick Power in the Limelight… and more!
