What do Rafael Nadal, Tiger Woods and dance training have in common? In the October/November issue, Emma Sandall looks at the issue of “intrinsic training” and how it relates to dancers and their dependence on the mirror.

This issue also features profiles of three magnificent dancers. Two are principals of the Australian Ballet – Andrew Killian and Leanne Stojmenov – fresh from leading roles in the new ‘La Bayadere’. The third is Australian Dance Theatre’s Kimball Wong, winner of Best Male Dancer at last year’s Australian Dance Awards.

Speaking of male dancers, this issue introduces our new columnist, Matthew Lawrence, principal dancer with the Queensland Ballet, who occasionally swaps his tights for a keyboard. He writes from a male point of view on the sometimes awkward nature of pas de deux. I’m sure you’ll enjoy his sense of humour!

Our cover story is a catch-up with Aurelian Scannella, the artistic director of the West Australian Ballet, including some gorgeous photos of the present compliment of dancers.

Direct from New York we have an article on the present line-up of Broadway shows. Our woman-on-the-ground, Susan Reiter, has dug up some fascinating news – such as Christopher Wheeldon’s ‘An American in Paris’, Susan Stroman’s ‘Little Dancer’ (yes, based on the famous Degas sculpture), Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ and Woody Allen’s ‘Bullets over Broadway’. Who knows, they might end up in Australia!
